About
Nigel Muter is a contemporary painter based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, whose work explores the space between what is given and what the viewer contemplates.
He studied Fine Art Painting at Central Saint Martins and has exhibited his work in the UK and internationally. His paintings are held in private collections in Britain and elsewhere.
His work is rooted in an interest in abstraction, perception and the way the mind searches for meaning in an image. Rather than providing a complete or fixed interpretation, the paintings leave space for the viewer to bring their own associations and experiences to the work.
Alongside his own practice, Nigel has many years' experience in art education, mentoring and professional development. He works with artists and prospective art students on developing ideas, strengthening portfolios and finding greater clarity and individuality within their work.
